I used spray paint that I had leftover from this mason jar d.i.y. that I tried out in the fall, and that you can see in the top picture.
See what I did after the jump.
Supplies:
Gold and cream-coloured spray paints (suitable for use on wood)
Painter's tape
Wooden tissue box cover (mine was from Michael's)
First, following the directions on my can of spray paint, I put on 3 coats of the cream colour and let it dry for 24 hours. Then I used my painter's tape to make a chevron pattern. Instead of measuring, I just eyeballed with a strip of painter's tape to keep the width of the chevrons uniform. The pattern got kind of wonky on one end, but I just went with it and made a little diamond shape as you can see in the bottom right image:
Next I added 2 coats of gold paint, and voila!
Tips:
Everytime I spray paint I make the mistake of holding the spray paint can pointing directly at the object that I'm painting when I start spray, and this makes the paint uneven. Instead, it's best to actually start spraying to the side of the object and then move over the entire surface in a back-and-forth motion.
As you can see in the final picture, the gold paint bled underneath the painter's tape slightly, but I think this was because the surface of the tissue box cover was uneven. On the bright side, it happened pretty uniformly over the whole thing, so it doesn't bother me too much.
Also, my Scotties tissue box doesn't fit perfectly underneath, but luckily tissue boxes are squishable!
