d.i.y. potato stamp tote bag

Supplies:
  • canvas (2 pieces cut 40 cm x 43 cm)
  • lining fabric (2 pieces cut 40xm x 43 cm)
  • straps (2 x 80cm pieces)
  • cardboard
  • potato
  • knife
  • toll paints & fabric medium

Directions:
1. Cut fabric and set aside

2. Cut out potato stamp

3. Mix toll paints with fabric medium (2 paint: 1 fabric medium ratio) and use paintbrush to brush on paint to stamp

4. Place cardboard underneath the canvas

5. Let canvas dry and then iron the back of the fabric to set the paint

6. Place the two canvas pieces, good sides (the sides that will be exposed) facing each other and sew along three sides, leaving the top open

7. Sew the lining fabric all along three sides, except for the last side, leave about half of the last side unsewn

8. Flip the lining inside out, so that the exposed frayed edges are now inside

9. Place the lining pouch on the inside of the canvas so that the good sides are facing each other. When you look at the tote bag, the frayed side of the canvas should be exposed on the outside and the frayed side of the lining should be exposed when you look inside the tote

10. Place the straps between the two layers of canvas and lining, making sure the straps are straight from one side to the other, and that they going to be sewn into the bag so they will not be exposed

11. Sew along the top of the bag, securing all three layers of canvas, lining, and straps (canvas on the outside, straps in the middle, and lining on the inside)

12. Now you can flip the entire tote through the part of the lining left unsewn so that no frayed edges are exposed

13. For the unsewn portion of the lining, fold the edges inwards and sew over so it looks neat

14. Sew the top of the tote bag all around to secure the straps

Notes:
  • Be creative with your stamps! I cut out a camera because this was a gift for my photographer friend. I plan on making more in the future using different shapes and making pouches and clutches with the canvas.
  • For step 14, I used colored thread that matched the stamps for extra detailing.
  • If you end up making one of these, leave a comment or send us a message - I'd like to see what sort of stamp you ended up carving out of that potato.
